Cowichan Residents Love Life in the Valley

Cowichan Residents Love Life in the Valley

Duncan, BC – Residents in the Cowichan Valley are feeling pretty good about their quality of life. A Community Satisfaction Survey that was conducted on behalf of the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD) in September 2016 found that 95 per cent of residents rated the overall quality of life as either good or very good.

“The survey was held to get input from residents in the valley about their quality of life, delivery of CVRD programs and services as well as how best to communicate with residents,” explains Board Chair Jon Lefebure. “The last survey was conducted in 2011, and it was important to the Board to reconnect with the residents on issues that matter to them.”

Some key findings of the survey include:

  • the top five issues residents are concerned about are drinking water, traffic and roads, taxation and municipal government spending, education and schools and affordability
  • 93 per cent support the CVRD developing strategies regarding water security planning
  • 90 per cent support the development of strategies on affordable housing
  • 85 per cent support climate change adaption strategies
  • 85 per cent support alternative energy strategies
  • 91 per cent satisfied with curb-side recycling collection (in electoral areas)
  • 79 per cent satisfied with the CVRD’s parks and trails
  • 78 per cent satisfied with curb-side garbage collection (in electoral areas)
  • 70 per cent prefer the CVRD set aside funds each year to finance large capital projects

When it comes to how residents want to receive information from the CVRD, the majority would go directly to the CVRD website (67 per cent). Residents would also prefer the CVRD send important updates to them directly by email (35 per cent) or letter mail (21 per cent).

Six hundred CVRD residents took part in the 12-minute phone survey conducted by ENRG Research Group. Over 100 more residents filled out the online version.
